Message From The President

Greetings CCBN members, potential members, and nursing students;

The month of February has been wonderful! As we celebrate black history, please take the time to reflect on CCBN's history. Our city gave birth to the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). Watch the "CCBN Legends" video on our website: www.clevelandcouncilofblacknurses.org. Read about NBNA's history and its founders: www.nbna.org. This organization came into existence for "us" as black nurses. It is here that we find support and encouragement. May we always appreciate this organization's rich history! Vitrea (CCBN Vice President), Tiona (CCBN Legislative & Health Policy Committee Chair), Amber (CCBN Health Education & Community Committee Chair) and I (CCBN President) traveled to Washington DC for the 31st Annual NBNA Day on Capitol Hill! We took a photo with Senator Sherrod Brown at the "Coffee with Senator Brown" event. Our vice president and myself met with Senator Brown's legislative staff. Tiona and Amber met with Congresswoman Marcia Fudge's legislative staff. They took nursing students with them to the meeting. What a great experience for nursing students! NBNA prepared us for our meetings by providing a legislative toolkit. Within the contents of the toolkit are 5 topics: Maternal Mortality, Gun Violence and Related Consequences, Climate Change and Environmental Justice, The Health Equity and Accountability Act, Opioid Crisis NBNA provided the research and recommendations for each topic. What an honor it was to join black nurses from all over the nation to advocate for our patients! We wore red in honor of women's heart health! The first registered nurse of Congress, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, spoke to us at the event! The youngest black female to serve in Congress, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, who is also a registered nurse, was present! Thank you, CCBN, for supporting the 4 of us to go and represent our chapter! Please visit our website to view event photos www.clevelandcouncilofblacknurses.org and our Facebook page. Congratulations to Edward Bennett!!! He was recently accepted to the University of Pennsyl-vania's PhD program and was selected as a Fellow in their Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research. He is truly missed by our chapter but we wish him the best! May God continue to bless him!

CCBN President Stephanie Doibo MS, BSN, RN
